Patty Hudak

Maintaining an art practice is always a battle between space, money, and time. As an artist and a mother, I needed to organize these three elements, while I developed my character to be a more emotionally sound and compassionate person. Where the obstacles of motherhood to making art may be obvious, what was not initially apparent to me was how my work would develop as part of the process of parenting.  Being a mother has given me the skills to be a better artist.

Patty Hudak is an American artist, who moved with her family to Asia in 2005. After two years of producing drawings in Hong Kong, she became intrigued by Chinese culture, and moved to the thriving art city of Beijing. Her paintings of memory and emotions found a synthesis between Asian Ink traditions and the spirit of American Expressionism. After eight years in China, Patty moved with her family to Tokyo, Japan, where she is experimenting with a non- commercial art space called Nishimachi Artist Space. She is currently a student of traditional Japanese woodblock printing, recently taking carving lessons with Master Japanese Carver, Motoharu Asaka and participating as an artist in residence with Mi-Lab Mokuhanga Residency Program in Lake Kawaguchi.

She currently lives and works in Tokyo, Japan.
